The Adriatic!
This morning we got up with the 6 am Sunday church bells in order to get on the road in the cool of the day. The forecast was for the mid-90s and we had about 40 miles to cover.
The first 7 miles were exciting. We crossed the Lagoon of Grado and navigated through the island beach resort town to the Adriatic! This marked the official end of the Alpe-Adria route.
We breakfasted on a bench on the Grado promenade. The same old -- long shelf-life milk, muesli, granola, and peaches. Food helped lift spirits. Leaving early is tiring.
Lyle was our main navigator today (as Ruby was yesterday), and he managed to shave at least 6 miles off the route, shortening the ride to 33 miles. Yay! This was a triumph, considering the predicted heat.
We were all hanging in there fairly well and making fantastic progress until Ruby caught a tire in a railroad track and went down hard in the middle of the road. (When she fell a few days ago I yelled, "Oh Jesus, oh no" whereas this time I yelled, "Oh goddamit.")
The drivers were incredibly gracious and gave us lots of space to scramble onto the sidewalk and inspect knees, elbows, helmet. She is a trooper and has added to her collection of scrapes and bruises, poor kid. Nothing major.
Thankfully the rest of the ride was uneventful, and we made it to our campground at 12:45 after a lavish grocery store lunch that included gelato.
The very kind campground lady told us the pool would be closing in 15 minutes and let us sprint into our suits (and neon safety caps) and leap into the pool before properly checking in.
We went back to the pool at 3 pm when it reopened and have had a thoroughly relaxing afternoon.
Supper was a fail, however, earning the title of worst supper ever: Salad made from the world's most bitter lettuce, plain pasta with olive oil, and burned bean minestrone soup from a can. Ruby said the soup tasted like cigarette smoke, which it did.
Thank goodness tomorrow we ride the final 20 km to Trieste and put the bikes in storage for a week. With the Alpe-Adria behind us, we will pick up a rental car and head to Croatia and Slovenia. No more burned bean soup for at least a few nights!

DeletePlease tell Ruby to stay upright from here on out. Maybe she needs a baguette on her handlebars to keep her balanced? Are Lyle and Ruby going to write any posts? Those are fan favorites.
