Overcast today, with some significant gusts of wind. We breakfasted on fresh brochen, cheese, yogurt, tea, coffee, and granola at the campground cafe tables, and then set out for a fairly moderate day of riding -- just 29 miles.

Funny how our standards have changed. Thirty miles used to be a regular day for us, but now we know we can manage 42 or 45!

We watched a very cute swan family diligently preening their feathers with incredibly flexible necks...


There were some fantastic structures and towns along the way...


And some rough gravel and sand stretches (we've been spoiled by perfect pavement!)...

At lunchtime, just after Lyle declared it was time to look for food, we happened upon "meat shop" that gave us heaping plates of traditional German fare. Goulash over noodles, and thick slabs of ham, mashed potatoes, sauerkraut. We were able to work out some vegetarian(ish) options also, and everything was delicious and satisfying (and cheap). A highlight for sure!





Only a couple more days of camping and riding. That's okay with me -- the list of things we need to attend to when we get home is getting longer. We miss our pets, friends, and family and are ready to swim in the Calapooia and eat sweet corn!

    The food descriptions are always fantastic. They are highlights for us as well as for you! What beautiful architecture shots, too! My neck is less flexible, than that swan…. Gma

We finally began our ride today! After months of planning and effort, it was wonderful to get on the road.  We received a delightful send-off when the Back Road Club’s moped rodeo departed promptly at 6:00. Considering that they had closed the bar of the night before, I was a little surprised that they got moving so briskly. It was quite a sight, all these hard drinking, chain smoking, burly men, hopping on their mopeds, Vespas and tiny motorbikes for another day's adventure. We made a much quieter departure several hours later. We were forced into a schedule of 2 short days to start, so that we can meet a bus shuttle promptly at 10am in Flachauwinkl on the third day to transit a tunnel that doesn't allow bikes. Probably not the strangest way to plan an entire itinerary, but certainly a great chance to visit Flachauwinkl... We had a delightful day of riding up the river with a nice tailwind. Lots of bikes going both directions and all the Alpine scenery ...

Well, it's sunny and 83 degrees, which is perfect June weather in Austria, but it's also outside the two-degree range of comfort for Oregonians, so we are hot. Some of what we're experiencing this afternoon -- speaking for myself, at least -- is the jitters. Anticipatory heat stroke, haha. What were we thinking? I feel like I got lulled into believing we could bike over the Alps by articles like this: The Alpe Adria trail starts with roughly two days of gentle climbing. There’s then a nice descent to the Villach basin, another climb and finally a couple of days on a gently descending path down to Grado.  Lyle was studying the route yesterday, and there are multiple 15% grades and about 9,000 feet of climbing. Did I realize that when I suggested this route? Too late now. I'm along for the ride. This morning was delightful. We rode our bikes (sans gear) down to the blue-green Salzach River and cruised along shady, quiet paths to Mozartplatz. There were so many folks out ...

Up and Over!

Today we got up and boogied by 8:45, ready for our 44-mile challenge day. Our first stop was a bike shop where we picked up a couple canisters of CO2 and some sunglasses for Ruby. We also got Lyle's wheel trued, and then we were on our way. The first five miles were bliss -- relatively flat paths traversing idyllic valley scenery. Then we began a ten mile climb. Yes -- ten miles. This literally took several hours.  Starting up the hill. Where we were headed. It was a spectacular ascent that took us through villages, farmsteads, forests, green pastures, and wildflower meadows. It was a quiet and peaceful slog. Other than our own heavy breathing and groans, the only sounds were tinkling cow bells, birdsong, and a rushing snowmelt river.  Around mile 15 Dave and I came upon the kids, who had zoomed up the mountain ahead of us, and we inhaled cheese, salami, bread, kiwis, apples, peanut butter, and cookies.
