Hot again
We are in a campground with good wifi tonight, so yesterday's post now has pictures.
Both tents did a fine job of keeping the rain out, but as the sun rose, so did the humidity and soon everything was as wet on the inside as the outside. The river that we were camping next to had overnight gone from being glacial green to Mud Brown. Apparently it had poured rain even more up on the Alps.
Tonight's Campground is as strange as all the rest of them, but has a very nice little bike tourist area where we fit in quite well. So far we have met a Belgian woman riding through Slovenia. A Danish guy who we can't remember where he is going, but he is having fun on his way, and speaks flawless English. A German Kid heading for Trieste. And a Polish guy who has done the route before and is full of information about places to stay.. We expect that everyone else will be out by 6:00 in the morning, and we will be on the road several hours later. The heat is pretty bad, low 90s, so we would prefer to get going sooner, but somehow never quite get there. It is no one in particular's fault, we just have a lot to do in the mornings apparently. All these individual Travelers are able to just get up, eat or not, stuff a wet tent into a bag and ride on.
Last night it poured rain as Liv and I were coming home from the store and so we had to scramble in the dark to cover the bikes and deal with all the panniers.
As always, preconceived notions end up steering us wrong. There was a Swiss couple on motorcycles camped near us, looking tough and hard bitten after days on the road. Last night I saw them looking at their tour book, and somehow without motorcycle clothes and wearing your reading glasses, you don't look quite as tough. I spoke with them this morning to ask where they were going and they were wonderful people and very nice to chat with. They will be traveling through Slovenia and Croatia and expect to get to Greece in about 6 weeks.
We are happy to be back on the official route now even though we did enjoy the special bypass around the closed tunnel. We have come down the Drau River and tomorrow will evidently go up aways and tie into another River that heads south. It will not be a long day, but as there was no camping available for quite a long stretch, we will be forced to use an Italian B&B. We will compare our camping experiences with some luxurious 1 star housing. I won't mind getting off the ground for a night.
Today's riding was very much without traffic, most of the time on very fine gravel or farm roads.
Wow, as much energy as you guys are using, you must be starving all the time! Now I appreciate the title of this blog even more. I really love following along on your trip!
ReplyDeleteHi Jeannie :-) I'm really glad you're enjoying following along. And yes, food is a major focus!
DeleteLoved this description, Dave. Especially the motorcyclists in their reading glasses. Gma
